Steve Furr is setting the sportsman world on fire this year. He has 11 final round appearances to his credit so far, including 4 national event victories and a runner-up.
Furr’s most recent NHRA appearances include a Super Gas win in Chicago and a runner-up at this weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.
Dan Northrop (2000 NHRA Super Gas Champion) got the win as Furr went under the 9.90 index by a heartbreaking .005 seconds. Furr had the starting line advantage of .021 to Northrop’s .030 reaction time, but just could not get inside the .009 he needed.
Less than 2 weeks ago, Furr closed the deal in Super Gas at Route 66 and even made the semifinal round of the JEGS Allstar race in Top dragster. Rain had delayed the running of the final round until midnight. The late nights and long weekends at the track have caused Furr to feel like he has been racing (instead of working) for a living. But, the added seat time has surely paid off.
“The win at Chicago marked my third NHRA Wally in just under 8-months time. It was a very cool experience. To make another final round at Norwalk is just an unreal situation. I won this national event when it was an IHRA race. I really wanted to add an NHRA Wally to my Norwalk collection, but it just did not work on this weekend,” said Furr. “I surely picked up a serious amount of points though and that is the good part of it all.”
Furr needs to give partial credit to Kenny Myers for this year’s success. Myers had attended only four races this year and Furr won each and every one of the outings.
In addition to his trackside help, Furr would like to extend a very special thank you to his loyal marketing partners that include Hoosier tires, Sunoco and Bearden Oil, Milodon, Holley Ultra Carbs and APD, Hooker Headers, Harwood Industries, Autometer, Biondo Racing Products, TCI, BTE, MSD, Mr. Gasket, Weld Racing, Moser, PAR race engines and Scott Duggins, Mark Horton and American Racecars, CDS and Matt Zapp
