Ashley prepared for American Drag Racing League Challenge

HATTIESBURG, MS. – The last time NHRA AMS/TLR World Champion Mike Ashley competed in an American Drag Racing League event, he achieved more milestones than he could have imagined. The inaugural ADRL outing played host to an Ashley barrage of accomplishments which included a qualifying berth in the quickest-ever outlaw Pro Modified Quick Eight, induction into a special three-second club and the largest point total of any driver for the special team competition.

A few weeks later Ashley claimed his first world championship in Las Vegas, Nevada to add to the momentum created that day in Jackson, SC. Being a realist, the New York Mortgage Banker who drives the Torco Race Fuels-sponsored ’67 Shelby Mustang, knows that he has to start all over with the new season.

“Our desire hasn’t waned in the least when it comes to winning,” Ashley said. “It took a lot of work, focus and dedication to capture what we did last season. We are prepared to bring that same intensity to the table for 2005. We owe that to our sponsors and fans that have supported us through the good times. All it takes is to win one championship and it creates an insatiable desire to win another one.”

Ashley will be bringing out his new TM Race Cars entry for only the second time since he debuted the new ride a week ago in Gainesville, Florida with positive results.

This weekend’s ADRL Winter Drags in Hattiesburg, MS, marks the first real challenge for Ashley since clinching the right to bear the #1 on his windshield. He will find himself head-to-head with the baddest of the bad outlaw Pro Modifieds.

“This weekend’s event will set the tone for the season,” Ashley said. “That’s why we are more concerned with being the most consistently quick we can be. I have the utmost of confidence in my crewchief Chuck Ford and the crew. They are champions in every sense of the word.”

Ashley scored one national event victory and a runner-up en route to the 2004 NHRA AMS/TLR crown. A testimony to the team’s consistency was the fact they finished #1 in qualifying points for 2004.

“If you want to have a chance in a program that’s as tough as the NHRA TLR/AMS Pro Modified series is,” Ashley added. “You had better be able to repeat time after time. Our number one goal is to do just that in 2005.

“I’m just glad we have this ADRL event that allows us to maintain full speed by the time the season opens in Gainesville next month.”

Qualifying for this weekend’s ADRL Winter Drags in Hattiesburg, MS., begins on Saturday at Noon. Teams will be afforded two more sessions at 2:00 and 4:00 PM. Final eliminations are slated for 7 PM.
