Albright, Cultrera & Serra Secure Wins at Mickey Thompson $40 Grand Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park
Some of the best bracket racers in the country fired their engines for the annual Mickey Thompson Tires & Wheels $40 Grand Nationals presented by Hughes Performance, Sept. 3-5, 2021 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.
Among those powering down a perfectly-prepared track was Adam Albright of Fremont, Ohio, who was resolute through several rounds of eliminations on his way to recording a .007 reaction time and a 5.72 elapsed time in his Nova to take the win over Travis Colangelo and his dragster for the Friday, Sept. 3 running of the event.The total payout for the event was an incredible $262,875, and Albright earned $15,000 of it, while Colangelo earned $7,500 of it.
“Winning last night hasn’t really set in for me yet,” said Albright, whose Nova is powered by a 509 cubic-inch big-block Chevrolet built by Level Performance and backed with a Powerglide built by Fleenor Racing Transmissions. “I’m still trying to process it all. This race was a bucket list race of mine. The car was really good all night and I was decent when I had to be.”
When rain arrived on the second day of the event, Saturday, Sept. 4, racers turned their focus to completing the race the next day. Coming out on top was Kyle Cultrera, who made it to the final round of eliminations with both of his entries, securing the win as well as the runner-up. Cultrera earned $40,000 for the win and $20,000 for the runner-up.
Competitors showed no signs of slowing down on the final day of the event, Sunday, Sept. 5. Among them was Jeff Serra, who paired an .017 reaction time with a 4.48 in his dragster to defeat Matt Dadas in the final round of eliminations. For his extraordinary efforts, Serra earned $20,000, while Dadas earned $10,000.
