PHOENIX – In the first of two NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events for this weekend’s Pacific Division double-header at Firebird International Raceway, John Bycroft of Phoenix took the win in Super Street while JR Lobner scored for the second time in as many weeks.

 

Bycroft drove his ’69 Dart to the win over Bob Richmond, Glendora, Calif., in 10.905 seconds at 133.66 mph pushing Richmond to breakout running too quick with a 10.852 second run on the 10.90 index.

 

Lobner, Gardner, Kan., won in the division’s Top Sportsman class for the second week in a row winning the NHRA Arizona Nationals last weekend.  Lobner clocked in at 7.537 at 181.86 mph in his ’05 S-10 to beat Shawn Herbst, Selah, Wash., with a 7.715, 179.23 with his ’63 Corvette.

 

In Comp Eliminator it was veteran racer Jeff Lane posting the win out of North Bend, Wash., and Dennis Paz, Stockton, Calif., went the distance in Super Stock holding off Scott Pearson, Stewartville, Minn.

 

Super Gas came down to a Southern California match up with Chad Langdon, La Mirada, Calif., defeating Robert Naber, Ontario, Calif., on a holeshot in his ’74 Apollo. 

 

Art Hoover, Concord, Calif., won in Top Dragster over Jim Momjian, Golden Valley, Calif.  Hoover crossed the finish line in 6.702 seconds at 198.82 mph to Momjian’s 7.013, 193.65.

 

Norman LaPointe, Elden Lacer and Rick Newport rounded out the first set of winner’s for the weekend with the Sherwood Park, Alb., Can., racer LaPointe taking out Leo Glasbrenner, Chino, Calif., in Stock Eliminator.  Elden Lacer, Las Vegas, beat Luke Bogacki, Carterville, Ill., in Super Comp, and Newport, West Valley, Utah, rode his ’95 Suzuki to victory over Brockman Roberts, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., in  Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.  Newport went 134.86 mph to Roberts’ 133.98 on his ’06 Harley.

 

All racers were back at it Sunday morning for the second half of the double-header with final eliminations scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

PHOENIX – Ray Martin and Jay Payne took home the trophies in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car in the second half of the double-header weekend for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Firebird International Raceway.

Martin, Anchorage, Alaska, defeated series hitter Chris Demke in round one and defending Lucas Oil National Champion and No. 1 qualifier Jim Whiteley in the final  to take the title for this weekend’s NHRA West Region opener.  Martin made runs of 5.35, 5.42, and 5.39 seconds during Sunday’s eliminations in a field stacked with competition. 

Payne, a veteran NHRA regular out of Claremont, Calif., beat reigning NHRA West Region champion Annie Whiteley in round one, former Pacific Division champion Doug Gordon in round two and 5x Northwest division champion Brian Hough for the win and an invitation to the winner’s circle celebration.

Local racers Ryan Giacone and Roger Griggs, both of Phoenix, worked their way through eliminations but came up one win short as they fell in their final rounds.  Giacone lost to Dennis Padilla Sr., Arvada, Colo., in Super Street and Denny Alves, El Cerrito, Calif., beat Griggs in the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson final.

In Comp Eliminator, it was Lou Ficco Jr., taking the win over Tom Mettler running 6.970 seconds at 187.55 mph in his ’09 GXP while R.J. Torres and Michael Brand II won in Super Stock and Stock respectively.  Torres put his ’68 Mustang in the winner’s circle defeating Darren Smith’s ’68 Dart and Brand, took out Richard Pauley in his ’73 Firebird.

Mera Silvia, Upland, Calif., covered the quarter-mile in 7.347 seconds at 180 mph for the win over Chris Newman, Lancaster, Calif., and Steve Casner of Sheridan, Calif., went 166 mph in 7.105 seconds to Mark Colton Sr.’s 7.247, 190 mph.

Ken Mostowich and Jason Schade rounded out the weekend’s winners as Mostowich, Calgary, Alb., won in Super Comp and Schade, Northglenn, Colo., won in Super Gas in his ’65 VW Bug.

Pacific Division racers head to The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for their next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, April 29-30.
